Open yourself up to love and discover the power of your fourth chakra.

Located in the center of the chest, the heart chakra forms your deep bonds with other beings, and your ability to show compassion and respect. When balanced, the heart chakra allows you to show love to others and yourself.

Motivated by love, your fourth chakra is responsible for moving love throughout your life. As a healing and unifying chakra, it brings wholeness and recognizes love as the ultimate healing force. This enables you to live life with kindness and compassion towards others and yourself.

The heart chakra is the center of your deepest bonds with other beings. This expands your feelings of compassion, empathy, and respect. When your heart chakra is balanced, it gives you the ability to recognize that we are all interconnected and allows you to not only show love to others but to show love to yourself as well.

This is only a small example of the powerful message that is contained in GAIA Healing Step Four of Seven.

Key Characteristics of the Heart Chakra

  • Connection – The heart chakra is responsible for forming your deep bonds with other beings, including both romantic and platonic relationships.
  • Unconditional Love – This chakra is motivated by unconditional love. It gives you the ability to show love not only to yourself but to other people.
  • Compassion – The heart chakra is the center of your compassion for others, enabling you to be empathic and understand what others are going through. These qualities give your personality warmth and security that others are drawn to.
  • Respect – The heart chakra cultivates respect for yourself and others. This allows you to understand others’ ideas, thoughts, and boundaries.
  • Forgiveness – As a healing center, the heart chakra enables you to let go of past experiences and forgive others. When you encounter feelings of hurt, you are able to feel them fully and then move on from them, opening up your heart to new experiences and relationships.

Heart Chakra Imbalance

The chakra system distributes the flow of prana or energy throughout your subtle body. Stress, illness, emotional upset, or conflict all can cause blockages or imbalance in your chakra system. All of the seven chakras are interconnected; when one chakra experiences a blockage or imbalance, it affects all the others. This disruption of energy can cause your mind, body, and spirit to suffer.

When the heart chakra is imbalanced, it can cause emotional and physical distress. If you are working on improving your compassion and empathy or forming a deeper bond with others around you, it is important that you open and balance your heart chakra.

Underactive Heart Chakra – When a chakra is underactive, it means that the chakra is experiencing a blockage or is not distributing the flow of energy. When your heart chakra is underactive, it can affect your overall well being.

When your heart chakra is blocked or underactive, you may experience the inability to forgive others or move on from past experiences. When the heart chakra becomes blocked, it often detaches you from your emotions, numbing you from love and compassion.

Signs of an underactive heart chakra:

  • Withdrawn
  • Lacking Empathy
  • Unforgiving
  • Isolation
  • Overly Critical of Yourself
  • Overly Critical of Others

Overactive Heart Chakra – When a chakra is overactive, it means that the chakra is distributing too much energy. It is working in overdrive and bringing imbalance to the chakra. When your heart chakra is overactive, it affects your overall well being.

If your heart chakra is overactive, it can lead to a lack of discernment in relationships, leaving you emotionally drained. When the heart chakra is overwhelmed with energy, it can lead to you overexert yourself in your personal life, allowing your relationships to become toxic. You may feel ruled by your emotions and overly dependent on your relationships.

Signs of an overactive heart chakra:

  • Codependent
  • Neglect Emotional Self-Care
  • Lost Sense of Identity
  • Lost Sense of Personal Boundaries
  • Saying Yes to Everything Even When it Hurts You
  • Giving to Others Without Restraints
  • Heart Chakra

How to Balance Your Heart Chakra

Chakra balancing is the process of restoring the harmonious and balanced flow of prana or energy throughout the body. Your chakras are in constant fluctuation. Practicing chakra balancing and aligning is a regular and sometimes daily activity to explore. But how do you balance your heart chakra?

Volunteer – As the center of your compassion and empathy, it is important to not only experience new things but to also put yourself in other people’s shoes and learn how you can help them. Bring balance to your heart chakra by making a habit of volunteering. This helps connect you to the compassionate and empathetic energy of the heart chakra.

Get Outside – The heart chakra is highly influenced by the element of air; getting outside and breathing in fresh air can help restore and bring balance to your fourth chakra. Try to get out of the city and away from pollution, somewhere where the air is clean and fresh. When outside, practice deep breathing exercises.

Physical Activity – Yoga can be a powerful tool in bringing balance and harmonious flow of energy to your heart chakra. Yoga poses for the heart chakra should focus on opening the chest and draw energy into the heart.

Meditation – Meditation plays an important role in restoring balance to your chakras. Chakra meditation techniques are similar to traditional meditation techniques but focus on a specific area of the body. Below is a simple meditation technique to aid in balancing your heart chakra.

  • Sit with your shoulders back and spine straight. Relax your muscles as you close your eyes and breathe deeply. Inhale through your nose and exhale through the mouth.
  • Focus your attention on the location of your heart chakra: the center of your chest at heart level.
  • Since the heart chakra is tied to the color of green, imagine a green glow at the center of your chest, slowly expanding throughout your ribcage and making the whole area warm and relaxed. Rest in this sensation for 3-5 minutes.
  • When you are ready, slowly open your eyes. You may follow with positive affirmations.

Affirmations – Positive Affirmations are a positive way to heal negative programming that can be embedded in your subtle body. When balancing your heart chakra, practice saying these phrases to yourself:

  • I love and accept myself with all my heart
  • I live in balance and in a state of gratitude
  • I am connecting with other beings
  • All love resides in my heart
  • I am open to giving and receiving unconditional love
  • I welcome into my heart center abundant joy and unwavering peace
  • As I release past hurts, my heart lightens and my life is enveloped in pure love
  • I freely and easily connect with all living beings, knowing that I am one with the universal tapestry of all life
  • Love is the guiding force in all my words, thoughts, and actions
  • I release all grievances I once held toward others and embrace forgiveness for all, including myself
  • Kindness, respect, and love emanate throughout my life
  • I love and accept myself unconditionally, just as I am
  • It is easy for me to form supportive, loving relationships with others
  • I am loved, loving, and loveable. Love is at the core of my very existence
